GMO News Update

Things are popping on the GMO frontline.

California Petition to label GMOs!

In California they are getting ready to proceed with a petetion drive to label genetically modified food.

Efforts to enact labeling laws in Congress and the California legislature have been blocked by big food and chemical company lobbyists. This measure will take the issue directly to the people to decide whether genetically engineered foods should be labeled. Why is this important to people outside of California? California commands 10% of the retail grocery market nationwide. A win in California for GMO labeling would be a crippling blow to the sale and production of GMO crops across the country and worldwide. Since I don't live in California I donated money to help them succeed. You can read more about the California labeling law here:

If you want to donate money to OCA  who needs to raise at least $50,000 in the next 30 days to carry out public education and to help their coalition partners recruit, train, and deploy several thousand volunteer petition gatherers, click here: http://organicconsumersfund.org/label/

Trader Joes is targeted for all the GMO foods they carry.

Trader Joes claims their brand name product line of food is GMO free but why do they refuse to label it as such?

Why are they carrying so many product lines that have GMO food in them? (See the brand name list by clicking below and downloading the pdf's.) If you shop at Trader Joes and did not know they are carrying GMO lines and that many people question if Trader Joes private label is really GMO free, then you should read what Organic Consumers Association has to say about Trader Joes. Additionally OCA is taking action to get Monsanto out of Trader Joes. You can help if you are a customer. It will not cost you anything except a few moments of your time to read the following and print a couple pages to take to Trader Joes. you can also sign their petition while on their website.   http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_24285.cfm

Last Week the U.S. was sued for using GMO crops in wildlife refuges.

Last Wednesday on November 2nd, Food Safety and Environmental groups joined forces and sued the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to end the cultivation of GMO crops on Midwestern wildlife refuges. GMO alfalfa - This is one of the best articles on GMO afalfa I have read recently. It was published on October 18, 2011. Even though you don't eat alfalfa, most dairy animals do and it effects you if you eat any kind of milk, cheese or butter.
Organic Farmers told by Court of Appeals they can Sue GMO farmers:  In August, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled that organic farmers can sue conventional GMO farmers seeking damages for the loss of their crops, as well as lost profits, caused by the illegal trespassing of pesticides and herbicides on their property.
